PCAAT Students Prepare to Impact Mozambique

January 10, 2007

Prairie College of Applied Arts & Technology’s (PCAAT) inaugural class of Nursing and Health Care Aide students together with three of their nursing instructors are excited to be planning Prairie’s first medical mission’s trip to rural Mozambique at the end of this academic year.

The purpose of the trip is to provide assistance at a small rural medical clinic that treats an average of 200-500 people per day.  The clinic is run by Lynn & Dwight Lagore, Prairie alumni and founders of Southern African Missions.

Mozambique is a country that has been devastated by decades of war, drought, and floods.  Malaria claims the lives of over 50% of children under the age of 5 in Mozambique and life expectancy in this country of 20 million people is 34 years of age.  The PCAAT team will be delivering prophylactic malaria vaccinations, assisting with medical delivery, wound care, first aid as well as providing basic health care education and visiting surrounding villages to attend to those people who are too sick to walk to the clinic.

“This is exactly what the college of applied arts and technology was created to do,” exclaims Prairie President Dr. Jon Ohlhauser. “Not only will these students be certified to work within the medical profession at home, they have the ability to travel to an area where their medical training will have a tremendous impact on the local people. No doubt the lives of the students participating will also be changed. This clearly demonstrates, in a meaningful way, Prairie’s mission of enabling the Body of Christ to reach the world with the gospel of Christ.”

Dean Candy O’Connor adds, “This is an exciting time for the team as they prepare for the trip in May, 2007 as I know it will be a life changing event for all involved.  I would encourage you to pray for the preparation and success of this trip.”

The PCAAT team is seeking financial support to enable them to make the trip.  All donations should be addressed to Prairie Bible Institute and clearly designated for the PCAAT Medical Mission’s Trip so that a tax receipt can be issued.  Any funds sent in excess of the team’s trip costs will be used to provide medical supplies to the clinic.
