Prairie Gets Credit for Another First - International Practicum for Practical Nurses

April 22, 2008

In June a group of second-year Practical Nursing students from Prairie College of Applied Arts & Technology (PCAAT) will be participating in an international practicum to provide healthcare to hundreds of people in Mozambique. This is the second year that Prairie nursing students have provided care overseas but this is the first time that they are able to receive college credit for doing so.

This is the first recognized international practicum to be offered for Practical Nursing students in Alberta.

Last May Prairie nursing students went on a medical mission to Mozambique. At that time students were offered the opportunity to get credit if they went as Bow Valley College students. Their overwhelming response was that they were afraid that people would think they were doing it just for credit. Instead they went as a medical missions team from Prairie College of Applied Arts & Technology. Because of Prairie’s reputation for training students for international work no one questioned their motives. This new arrangement with Bow Valley College allows these students to go truly as healthcare providers first and foremost and then as students receiving credit as a secondary benefit.

“It has been truly amazing to watch these young students grow in their understanding of what it means to serve,” says PCAAT Dean, Candy O’Connor. “ They sincerely want to impact the world and now have the opportunity to do this as a part of their studies. Many are considering a career overseas as a result of these experiences.”

Prairie is thankful for the diligent work of the Healthcare Faculty at Bow Valley College. Their efforts ensured that the necessary elements needed to meet the provincial practicum requirements were achieved. This enables students to not only relieve suffering and to provide compassion and hope, but that they will also be recognized in a formal way for the work that they complete.

Mozambique is a country that has been devastated by decades of war, drought, and floods. Malaria claims the lives of over 50% of children under the age of 5 in Mozambique and life expectancy in this country of 20 million people is 34 years of age. The PCAAT team will be delivering prophylactic malaria vaccinations, assisting with medical delivery, wound care, first aid as well as providing basic health care education and visiting surrounding villages to attend to those people who are too sick to walk to the clinic.
