Current Students ARC Student Success Parents

Parents

Full of potential and brimming with excitement, your child has left the nest and landed at PRAIRIE. Breathless phone calls, changes shared from a distance, and experiences ranging from joyful to catastrophic are all components of your student’s new life. When it comes to supporting your student in his or her academic adventure, how can you help?

Positive college parenting from a distant:

  • Show genuine interest
  • Call, and when they’re busy…call again (and again and…)
  • Send! (letters, care packages, etc)
  • Encourage student to press on even in the midst of poor marks or frustration
  • Ask! (Experiences, spiritual growth, relationships, etc. Ask is not the same as ‘pry’ or ‘pressure’)
  • Affirm their significance in your family
  • Offer to pray, ask how you can.
  • Email; a quick note of encouragement can go a long way.
  • Boast about them to friends and family

Negative college parenting from a distant:

  • Expect them to call you first
  • Incite guilt for not calling or communicating
  • Express anger or resentment regarding finances or program choice
  • Negatively compare your student to more ‘advanced’ siblings or students

The Ultimate Care Package:

Every student longs for them, and you’d be surprised at how many times a day a student may check their mail box.

  • Something ‘homey’; the cookies only you can bake, a letter from a younger sibling, gift from your home church.

  • Gift certificates (Three Hills accepts gift cards for A&W and IGA, nearby towns also host Tim Hortens, Walmart, Boston Pizza)
