Discover Philosophy: Whole Person Involvement

"All of my classes had a direct bearing on who I am as a person. Each day and every class has forced me to examine a different aspect of myself: how I lead, how I think, my comfort zones, my personality. Each of these snapshots into me has required a lot of consideration and commitment towards change. It is a great encouragement to receive so much new insight so quickly, for it has caused me to take a good look at myself. I came into Discover to change, and now that I am here, I do not see any way that I could leave un-changed.” - Dan, Discover Alum ‘04

Mission Statement

Our mission is to glorify God by discipling Christian servant-leaders through excellent, biblically based, holistic education and community, enabling students to work together with the body of Christ redeeming humanity to their Lord.

"I’ve found our philosophy, and serious commitment to it, to be what defines a Discover education. Discover’s driving commitment is ‘right relationship with God, transforming the whole person for a life of worship and service.’ For me, Discover hasn’t just been an intellectual education, but an education in whole-person transformation, preparing my heart for worship of God, and getting my hands dirty in real life cross-cultural missions work." -David, Discover Alum ‘05

Our Values

Ask a Discover staff member about anything our program does – academics, small groups, language training, and chances are they’ll point to our values. Our values are what motivate all that we do. Here is a look of what we value and takes from former students on their experiences of the values in the Discover program.

Communion with God

“I learned that there is more to prayer than asking and that spending time alone with God is a wonderful, comforting, and humbling, yet peaceful thing.” -Rebecca, Discover Alum ‘05

People

“Discover creates community, and community creates transparency. That’s the brilliance behind a program like this; you end up with far more knowledge than can be taught in the classroom. It aims at holistic growth, and that’s what all Christians should strive for.” –Justin, Discover Alum ‘06

"Discover is a year of growth and in all honesty I think that can only be done when you are being stretched and pulled in many different directions…which I am so grateful for.  For me the most challenging parts were with my spiritual life and my relationships with others around me.  And it was interesting to see how incredibly close these two are connected. How to become a better or stronger Christian through me being a friend…becoming more open, vulnerable and honest and being a support for those who needed a supporter…or just doing the craziest, stupid things to make people laugh because who doesn’t love a good laugh?? Basically Discover is a year where you can get the opportunity to learn about life that may not otherwise come till ten years down the road.? - Carolyn, Discover Alum ‘06

“We were close before, but after someone mops your vomit from the floor and wipes your sweaty brow, you hold nothing back. There is a deep bond. Sometimes you need to be weak to get strong.? -Josh, Discover Alum ‘04

Grace Based Reconciliation

“…You can't live with 30 people day-in and day-out for a year without conflict; you have to address those issues or the rest of the year is shot. The pattern that is started in Discover carries on into your family/friend life and transforms the way you approach conflict?? -Stephanie, Discover Alum ‘06

“[Before I came to Discover] I was bitter and had a lot of walls built up around myself out of pride and fear.  I feel that through a close community and through the lessons I learned in Discover, I was able to slowly break down those barriers.? -Rebecca, Discover Alum ‘05

“Discover taught me the value of holistic living--that is, working through my past and moving towards healing. This was made possible through deep relationships and investments that my interns and friends in the program made in my life.? -BJ, Discover Alum ‘06

Servant Leadership

“Discover has redefined my idea of leadership, showing me that it is much more about humility, loving others, and walking with others through life with all of its challenges and joys.” - Sarah, Discover Alum ‘05

“It is sometimes easy to see a leader only by the role they hold, but while in Discover I began to realize that not only does a leader DO something, but more importantly they are to BE something. We are called to be the very hands, feet and voice of our Savior. This is the hard part of leadership, yet even Christ did not do this on his own strength, but sought the strength and will of his Heavenly Father. Through Discover I learned firsthand how important it is to daily be seeking the Lord for His wisdom and guidance, if I am going to minister to others.” - Marisa, Discover Intern ‘02, ‘03, ‘04

Pursuit of Truth

“I learned to see the Bible as one flowing story rather than several disconnected ones.  I admitted to myself that the supernatural does still occur and as a result I have begun to recognize the hand of God.? -Rebecca, Discover Alum ‘05

“My year in Discover has really inspired me to pursue meaning and truth in life. Discover has taught me so much about myself through community and the challenges that come with it. Before Discover, I didn't really know what my passions in life were, but now that Discover has come and gone, I have realized my God given passions and am on way to seek them out…” -Kyle, Discover Alum ‘06

Wisdom

“Discover has taught me the value of seeking God’s voice and desiring to act from that in a way that follows His will, rather than mine. I have been shown the importance of discerning truth and responding in a godly way to all of the information and knowledge and “noise” of the world around me.” -Sarah, Discover Alum ‘05

Experience and Involvement

“Discover gave me the opportunity to gain much needed experience in the mission field. It's a great opportunity to test the water before you spend four years of your life in school to get into missions only to realize missions is not your cup of tea... But that's not the only thing Discover offers, it has given me much needed life experience (relational, spiritual, mental, physical) that has built a foundation that I will be able to rely on for the rest of my life.” - Kyle, Discover Alum ‘06

“Whether it’s facilitating a group conversation or setting up a ministry in Latin America I feel much more able to practically employ knowledge and skills in real life than I would have before Discover.” - David, Discover Alum ‘05

“It is so easy to want to categorize leadership, ministry, mentoring, etc. into neat and distinct compartments within life, but through incorporating classroom theory with real life experiences, I quickly found that life is not putting on and off different hats to fit an occasion whenever we feel like it. For example, leadership is influence. We all influence others in some way, positively or negatively, every day. We are all leaders, and we have a responsibility to be aware of this and to choose to influence those around us in a Christ honoring way.” - Marisa, Intern ‘02, ‘03, ‘04

Responsibility

“ I never thought I would be in charge of the things people seemed to view me fully capable of simply because I am a college student. You go to Guatemala and they view you as the expert. You are given classrooms full of students eagerly waiting for you to impart some wonderful English lesson that will be the key to their futures. You're asked to preach at church on Sunday in Spanish. You're looked to for Biblical understanding in Bible studies and wisdom in everyday life. Sure, I still don't see myself as worthy of the challenge they have given me but if it is the opportunity God needs to work through me -who am I to say no to Him?? -Stephanie , Discover Alum ‘06

“Experiential Education and Ministry is summed up well in this quote, “Give them a fish and they will eat for a night; teach them to fish and they will eat for a life time”. More and more this was demonstrated to me over my two years of Discover internship; to support others, not by trying to solve all of their problems, but by giving them tools to take with them through life” - Marisa, Intern ‘02, ‘03, ‘04
