PURPOSE
The position of Admissions Counselor exists in order to effectively recruit new students. Specifically, the person works closely with the other members of the department to implement strategies and initiatives to assist Prairie in achieving its recruitment and admissions objectives. Their primary goal will be to generate qualified applications for Prairie’s campus-based and distance education programs through direct interaction with the Christian Community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Positively represent Prairie in order to recruit well-qualified students to the school;
- Be available to spend 30-40% of total work time on recruitment activities (travel) and 60-70% of time doing follow-up and planning (office). While most of the travel will occur in the fall (up to 50%), there will be periods of travel throughout the year;
- Manage a recruitment region, which includes:
- Working mainly with students from a specific geographic area, though may be required to travel and/or follow-up with students from other areas.
- Generating inquiries and applications;
- Maintaining a professional relationship with applicants and potential students;
- Meeting with representatives and prospective students from Christian and public schools, churches and other organizations, individual contacts with prospective students and their parents;
- Processing application documents as they are submitted;
- Actively pursuing inquiries & applicants, communicating with them the status of their application as well as all decisions regarding acceptance;
- Following up with accepted students
- Aiding the registration of first-year students
- Prepare application files for the Admissions Coordinator / Admissions Committee who make final admissions decisions.
- Advocate on behalf of the applicant and when necessary, present possible alternatives or options where applicable.
- Act as a representative of applicants with other departments at Prairie where necessary.
- Under the direction of the Admissions Coordinator, initiate, plan, coordinate and participate in recruitment-oriented events on and off campus.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess the following characteristics, experience and talents:
- Support Prairie’s Community Covenant;
- Support Prairie's mission & vision;
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience (familiarity with Christ-centered education would be an asset);
- Be very conversant with issues related to student life;
- Must have a proven record of tact and diplomacy and excellent public speaking skills. Experience speaking to large audiences would be an asset;
- Demonstrated ability and creativity in problem solving with a strong commitment to providing outstanding customer service;
- Be a self-motivated, “team player”;
- Familiarity with personal computers and MS Office software;
- Personal suitability, including stamina to maintain a hectic travel schedule;
- Some lifting and carrying of promotional materials and equipment set up;
- Valid drivers' license required.
