Prairie Launches EMT Program

March 19, 2007

Prairie College of Applied Arts & Technology is pleased to announce the launch of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program. Beginning in August 2007 students will have the opportunity to earn a provincially recognized EMT credential while at the same time integrate their faith with their studies.

In a ceremony in Three Hills, Alberta today, Prairie signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). This enables NAIT’s EMT program to be offered on Prairie’s campus this fall. Prairie adds a full year of Biblical and theological studies to the program so that students earn the EMT certification from NAIT as well as an Associate of Arts in Religious Studies from Prairie, all in twelve months. As a result of this newly-formed partnership, Prairie becomes the only faith-based centre of higher learning in Canada to offer the accredited program.

“EMTs are positioned in a unique way to share the love of God on a daily basis,” states Prairie Dean Candy O’Connor. “In many emergency situations the ambulance is often the first on the scene. As front-line healthcare workers they encounter people everyday who need their skilled assistance and comfort. Internationally, Canadian-trained EMTs are in high demand which creates opportunities for these students to serve beyond North America’s borders.”

President Dr. Jon Ohlhauser agrees. “In our fallen world we are in need of people who are technically skilled and who are Biblically literate. Graduates of this program will be equipped to share the gospel wherever the Lord places them, whether right here in Alberta or somewhere else around the globe. We are thrilled to add the EMT program alongside our other healthcare programs.”

Last fall Prairie College of Applied Arts & Technology began offering healthcare programs, starting with the Practical Nursing and the Health Care Aide programs along with Early Childhood Education.
