Al Mertes Joins Prairie's Faculty

July 31, 2006

The Church and Ministries Department of Prairie Bible College is pleased to announce the arrival of Mr. Allen Mertes as professor of Youth Ministries. A year ago plans were made to develop this full-time teaching position as part of the new curriculum offerings at Prairie.  Al and his wife Shirley come from Kelowna B.C., where Al had been a youth pastor at Trinity Baptist Church for 22 years. The youth program ministered to approximately 300 youth per week. Much of Al’s ministry involved the equipping and training of leaders and working with and training of volunteers for youth ministry. Al has written articles for Group Magazine, critiqued and written reviews of books on youth ministry, and has taught module classes on various aspects of youth ministry at theological colleges and seminaries within Canada. Each year for many years, Al has led ministry teams to Mexico and to the inner cities of Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The youth of the church also toured in Canada with unique programs suited to the youth of today. Al is currently writing a book entitled “Surviving Youth Ministry Long Term.” The addition of Al to Prairie College faculty will better able our students to prepare to minister in the church to reach the world with the Gospel of Christ.

“The church scene is changing in Western Canada. Small towns are growing, mid sized cities are increasing and some major cities are reaching populations of over one million,” states Mertes. “This population growth should bring excitement to the local church. I am filled with optimism as we develop the Bachelor of Arts in Ministry -Youth Ministries Major at Prairie. I look forward to equipping men and women to become passionate about ministry to teenagers across Canada and around the world to change the world we live in.”

Prairie’s President, Dr. Jon Ohlhauser, is also excited that Allen has joined the faculty. Dr. Ohlhauser is excited to note that, “Allen brings three important things to his position at Prairie. First, Allen has an undeniable love for Christ that will be infectious to the students. Second, Allen has a passion for the Body of Christ and the role it plays in God’s redemptive purpose. Third, Allen has more than 20 years of experience working with youth in the context of the church and is considered a national expert. I am thrilled that God has confirmed His call on Allen and his wife Shirley as they join the Prairie community this fall.”
