Is it worth the
Cost?
A Look at the Value
of Christian Higher Education
Choosing the right school for your child’s post-secondary
education is an important process. There are many details for both
you and your child to consider. ‘Price’ is likely near
the top of your list. As you weigh the benefits of Christian higher
education against those offered by secular schools you have undoubtedly
noticed a difference in cost. Upon considering the higher cost of
a Christian school like Prairie you are likely asking yourself,
“Why the higher price?” and “Is a Christian education
really worth the cost?”
To answer the first question, Christ-centred educational
institutions typically do not receive any funding from the government.
You may be surprised to know that Prairie students pay only
53% of the actual cost of their education. The remainder
comes from revenue sources such as the campus bookstore and from
the support of donors who give generously out of their own understanding
and gratitude for the education they received here at Prairie.
To address the value of a Christian education
it is important to recognize that a Christ-centred school possesses
three important distinctives. First,
unlike secular schools, the Christ-centred school teaches from the
perspective that the world and all things in it are God’s.
Belief in the truth of the Bible and our understanding of God have
a profound impact on how we view each discipline of study and significantly
influences the curriculum and teaching of each course.
Secondly, the Christ-centered
school strives to answer the question, “How do we
live ‘Christianly’ in today’s world?”
It seeks to teach students how to engage today’s culture and,
more importantly, how to address the tough daily struggles from
the perspective of Biblical truth.
Lastly, a Christ-centered school
takes a holistic approach to education. This educational
approach focuses on the whole person; not just academics but the
practical issues of daily living that take place outside of the
classroom. While we aim to offer solid academics and practical
experience, the most significant value of a Prairie education lies
in our deliberate efforts to leave a lasting spiritual impression:
the goal being a daily dependence on Christ and a life-long commitment
to His body, the Church.
